Where can people see your photography :
What made you want to create your blog , Tee Shot Me :
Well I came up with the name ‘Tee Shot Me’ as a sort of satire on ‘Kanye Taught me’; I just made it my own. I created my blog because I wanted to be able to post freely without creating clutter on my portfolio website.
Explain photography’s significance in your daily life :
I actually think in burst of images. When people speak to me their words are automatically transferred into images in my brain. I see the world in photographs. So I couldn’t really say explain the significance of photography in my daily life because it surpasses that. It is my daily life.
Who or what inspires you the most :
I can’t give a who, but people in general inspire me. I tend to work off the feelings of others. There’s so many different emotions that people express in this world, those are what drive my creativity. Feelings are only temporary. They can change in the blink of an eye. As long as people continue to express them any way they know how, it will continue to inspire me.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years :
I honestly can’t even tell you were I see myself 1 year from now. If I had to be optimistic I’d say Creative Director for several different magazines. There isn’t many predominate female African-American photographers on the scene. I just hope I become one of them by then.
Anyone that you would like to photograph in the future :
Tracee Ellis Ross, Tyler The Creator, Annie Leibovitz, Patrick Demarchelier, Danny Brown, Allan Kingdom, She’s Ryan and a bunch of up & coming artist.
Give your interpretation of what a “photographer” is :
There’s amateur photographers and then there’s professional photographers. I feel like amateur photographers have no desire to learn the technical aspect of photography, they just want to capture moments in time that interest them. Professional photographers crave the knowledge of how to capture a moment in time and compose it in a way that it will appeal to more than just self. Professional photographers want the viewers to construct a story from their images, not just look and compliment.
You actually don’t use the traditional SLR cameras. Explain what it’s like to work with film vs digital :
I love shooting in film. I love the challenge of it and I love the textures. I have 27-35 frames rather than 525, so that means I have to capture the image I see correctly on the first try because my frames are limited and film is not cheap. It give’s minimal room for mistakes. With digital I tend to over shoot everything, which makes process of elimination harder. I also never do much post processing to my film work, maybe some slight color corrections. With my digital work I can be in post processing mode for hours.
Could you imagine your life w/o photography being a huge part of it :
Well photography is my life, so without it I’d probably be a depressed broke college student.
Any advice you want to give to aspiring photographers out there :
Don’t look at the work of others and allow yourself to become discouraged. No one’s vision is the same, just focus on perfecting yours.

Kreative Khaos Photoshoot w/ Model Ade

Aliyah, head honcho behind Kreative Khaos, recently did a photo shoot of a budding model from Philadelphia. The model goes by the name of Ade. The two are actually friends so I’m sure the chemistry between the pair of them was there once the camera started snapping pictures. Below you can see some of the various shots captured :

How did you get into photo and film:

My mom is also into photography. Art is just something that I have always been surrounded by, so it wasn’t a surprise to me that I was into Photography. It comes natural for me and I love it. it’s a way to connect with people on a deeper level.

Explain how the name Kreative Khaos came about:

I started Kreative Khaos when I was in high school, in like the 10th grade I believe.

Who or what influences you the most :

The people around me influence me. My mom, my closest friends and Tim Burton also.

Any favorite photographers :

I don’t really have any favorites. But I do look up to Annie Leibovitz.

People can go to my site www.kreativekhaosphotography.com and for all inquires they can email me at aliyah1092@gmail.com or @Kreative_Khaos

How do you feel about the photography field and the direction it is headed in :

I think it’s headed in a good direction. There are a lot of talented people who are extremely passionate about the art.

A lot of people are calling themselves “photographers” . In your opinion , what do you think qualifies someone as a photographer :

In my opinion anyone can purchase a camera and take a photo. It’s what you do with the camera, it’s the person behind it. The camera is only a tool and you can’t really rely on it to produce the art for you. You have to rely on your eye. Every one’s eye is different when it comes to that though.

Anyone that you would like to collab with on future projects:

Wow, there’s so many people who I want to work with. I really want to work with Blu, Luii Baddass, Alysha Nett, Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Flatbush Zombies and plenty more.

Any advice that you can give to those who aspire to jump  into the same field as you :

Just be your self and work hard.

How would you describe your photography :

My photography is literally what it looks like; my complete outlook and perception of the environment I am in at the time, along with the beautiful people who I come in contact with. I love to focus on subjects and surroundings, enough to allow my audience to depict their own story of events, or sometimes not enough so my audience is forced to sit and analyze. My photography consists of stories, memories, messages. It is everything I believe is essential for an artist to properly express one’s self.

A lot of people are claiming the title of “photographer” lately. Your feelings on this photography wave people are trying to ride :

It is unfortunate that so many people think that being a “photographer” is as easy as they make it out to be. Purchasing a nice camera is nothing more than that; purchasing a nice camera. I believe what makes a photographer an actual photographer comes with time, struggle, vision, and love for the craft. Trying to dumb it down as most do, is offensive, and utterly discouraging sometimes. It begins to put a stereotype on art — which should never be the case. Art is life, and shouldn’t be tampered with or mocked in any way.

Your models each have their own beauty and style. How do you go about the people you photograph or use as your models :

It takes me literally 10 seconds to know if I wanna shoot someone. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, and I always make it my job to embrace it, and record it. If my heart races upon meeting you, and I happen to have my camera, I will demand you let me shoot you. Even if it’s for 5 minutes, and they happen to be shy. I am just thankful to always be surrounded by these people, I consider it a natural blessing more than something I ever “seek” to do. It really just happens.

Ok. Let’s talk bookings. How can someone contact you if they would like to have you shoot them :

Twitter has been my main source of contact for a lot of out-of-state people who either hear about my work, or peep when a friend or models post my work. Follow me,  @ihate_BILLIE. I’m always near my phone, so everyone can expect a quick response. I also have tumblr, which is home to my official blog for my work currently. My email can also be found on that blog, (hillaryagboolawest@gmail.com) Through these sources, and after brief discussion, I will gladly give anyone interested my phone number for direct contact.
Where can people access your photos you have taken :
http://hillarywestphotography.tumblr.com/ <— everything gets posted on here, and if they don’t make the site for whatever reason, I post them on my instagram: ih8billie <–

What are your thoughts on editing? A lot of people tend to over edit pictures which takes away from the photo itself :

My editing has always been natural based, to emphasis the beauty I initially see when I choose to shoot someone. Over-editing always takes away from the person/subject. I believe that my audience deserves the truth, and nothing but the truth, so I refuse to over-edit, or to add un-natural lighting to my photos. Everything is earth based. Everything is free and pure. I want my art to stay that way.

Where do you envision yourself in the next five years :

I see nothing but growth and success in the next five years. I have mentally prepared myself for the unthinkable. My visions are rapid, my ideas are always progressing, and I know that I cannot go wrong. My tools for life all came natural, and these include strength, and optimism. With those, I am unstoppable.

Is there any advice you can give to aspiring photographers out there :

Stay aware, stay open, and continue to envision. remember that your job as a photographer is NOT to please ANYONE but YOURSELF, because at the end of the day, it is your lens, your perception, and YOUR experience. Never allow the criticism of anyone else dis-encourage you. Always keep a free mind, and truly admire your vision. The more you love it, the more you will become it. Once you are an embodiment of your vision, everything will fall into place.

You also are a writer for NativHype.com . How did that whole thing come about  :

Life. Brandon is just a smart man. That’s all I can really say.

Who are your biggest influences and motivators :

My mother would have to be my #1 influence and motivator. In every aspect of the two. She is the most hard working person I know, and her love for life always keeps me happy and stress-free. She is my strength. After her, I would HAVE to say, Kanye West. He is everything I strive to be one day. His approach-mechanism is so similar to mine, always comes with dominating thoughts and ideas, and making them into reality no matter how people react or feel about them. Its perfect, and I see no way of failure approaching life that way. Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Jean Michel Basquiat, Helen Levitt, Phil Stern, and Terry Richardson are just a few others. The list goes on and on all for multiple reasons.
